We love canned corn not only because it’s delicious, but it is very economical, and it keeps a long time in your pantry. But just How to Make Canned Corn Better?  Most canned vegetables straight out the can be a little bit blah.  Learn some quick tips on how to make canned corn taste a little better.

How to Make Canned Corn Better

A secret tip to making canned corn taste better is adding a little bit of milk when heating up the corn. Adding milk to the water works for cooking corn-on-the-cob, but it also works well if you are just heating up canned corn for a tasty side dish.

Ingredients Needed for Tasty Canned Corn

  • 2 cans corn, drained
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • salt & pepper

How to Cook Canned Corn

Step 1. Drain the canned corn

Step 2. Add drained corn and about 1/2 cup of milk and 1 tablespoon of butter to a medium saucepan. Lightly salt & pepper. Bring corn to a light boil; reduce heat and let simmer on low for about 2-3 minutes or until corn is heated through.

How to Make Canned Corn Taste Better

Start with just one or two ingredients added to the corn. It could be some diced red or green pepper, bacon bits, heavy cream and Parmesan cheese. It does not need to be a complicated recipe to make corn taste better as a side dish.

Add a Little Butter and Some Fresh or Dried Spices:

  • Chopped Basil
  • Chopped Chives
  • Celery seeds
  • Fresh Thyme
  • Dill
  • Parsley
  • Oregano
  • Sage
  • Paprika

Ingredients to Add to Corn to Make Corn Better:

  • Butter – We like to use Salted Butter
  • Sauteed Onions
  • Heavy Cream
  • Bacon
  • Red Pepper
  • Green Pepper
  • Diced Ham –  Cubed Ham and Diced Ham
  • Cream Cheese
  • Chopped Green Chilis

Sweet Creamy Corn

1 (3 oz.) package cream cheese
1 (15 oz.) can of corn – drained
1 small can of chopped green chilis
1/4 cup chopped sweet red pepper
salt & pepper, to taste

Put everything in a medium saucepan and cook on low, stirring often. Cook for about 5 minutes or until everything is heated through.

Yummy Corn and Diced Ham

In a medium skillet, sauté diced ham in a little butter. Drain the corn and add to the skillet. Salt and pepper. Cook for about 3-4 minutes, or until everything is heated through.

Quick Canned Corn with Herbs

1 (15 oz.) can of corn
1 tablespoon butter
1/2 cup milk
1 garlic clove minced fine
1 teaspoon dried parsley
1 teaspoon dried thyme
salt & black pepper

In a medium skillet, cook the minced garlic quickly in the butter. Add the rest of the ingredients and let cook for about 5 minutes.

Add Additional Vegetables to Bump Up Nutrition and Taste

Don’t just serve plain canned corn where there are so many wonderful additions to add to not only boost the flavor but add additional nutrients to the side dish as well.

Add Beans – Kidney, Navy or Black Beans. Lima Beans and Canned Corn goes very well.
Cherry Tomatoes – cut in half and sautéed
Chives – fresh chives chopped
Olive Oil
Red Onions – the trick is to leave red onion slices in ice cold water for 10 minutes.
Diced and Saluted Zucchini – Corn and Zucchini

Should You Drain Canned Corn

Yes, canned corn should be drained of the liquid that it comes with in the can. This is simple to do if you cut the can top off but leave it in the top of the can. Hold your finger on the lid as you slowly turn the can upside down over the kitchen sink.

The reason we drain our canned corn is so it tastes better after we add the butter, salt and pepper. It sticks better to the corn!

What are The Health Benefits of Corn?

Corn is naturally rich in Vitamin C and antioxidants. Corn is loaded with healthy fiber and also high in starch, so even though corn is healthy, it should be eaten in moderation.  When eaten as a side dish to dinner or added to other recipes, it can help keep you feeling fuller longer. Higher fiber diets have been known to contribute to weight loss.

Why We Love Canned Corn

Canned corn is delicious and economical. Drain the corn, add a little butter, salt and pepper and microwave until hot and you can have a tasty side dish on the table in 2-3 minutes. Corn goes well with most other vegetables and is easily mixed in with rice and beans to make a tasty and hearty side dish.

There are so many ways to enhance the flavor of canned corn. Canned corn is very similar to frozen corn because they are both picked, cooked and stored quickly after the corn has been picked.

Can corn can quickly be added to most soups and stews, adding additional fiber and flavor.

Don’t Forget about Canned Cream Corn!

We love creamed corn, and it can also be used to make canned corn taste better. Mix a can of creamed corn with a can of regular corn. A little salt and pepper and butter and YUM a side dish to be enjoyed.

There are many ways to prepare canned corn that will add so much flavor. Don’t be afraid to experiment with the different spices and flavorful additions.  Canned corn can also be added to salads, muffins and even to tacos and many pasta dishes.
