One of the favorite foods for kids is an easy grilled cheese sandwich. Two pieces of white bread, some American cheese and lots of butter. Here is an Adult version of the classic grilled cheese that is filled with lots of gown-up flavor with two amazing cheeses.
Gourmet Grilled Cheese
What Ingredients are Needed to Make the Perfect Gourmet Grilled Cheese:
2 slices sourdough bread
1 tablespoon softened butter
3 tablespoons of mayonnaise
2 slices gruyere cheese
2 slices gouda cheese
2 teaspoons fresh parsley, chopped
1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
2 tablespoons caramelized onions, store bought or homemade
1/2 cup arugula leaves, roughly chopped (or baby arugula)
1 cup cherry tomatoes, to serve
How to Make this Delicious Grilled Cheese Sandwich in a Few Easy Steps:
- Combine the mayonnaise, parsley, and dried oregano in a small bowl.
- Butter the outside of the slices of sourdough bread. You can also add a little butter to the insides as well.
- Assemble the sandwich by layering the herbed mayo, caramelized onions, gruyere, arugula, and gouda between the non-buttered sides of the bread.
- Preheat your skillet.
- Place the sandwich buttered side down on a non-stick frying pan and cook over medium-low heat. Cook until golden-brown and crispy on both sides, approximately 6-7 minutes per side.
Couple of Grilled Cheese Tips:
Preheat the pan – heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat before adding the sandwich. This ensures that the bread gets crispy and golden without burning.
Cook low and slow – don’t rush the cooking process. Cook the sandwich over medium-low heat to allow the cheese to melt evenly without burning the bread. Covering the pan with a lid can help the cheese melt faster.
Somehow mayonnaise and grilled cheese just go so nicely together, so don’t skip the mayo!
