An easy tuna melt sandwich made in the oven is one of our favorite sandwich comfort foods. Warm gooey cheese on toasted bread with tuna fish salad in a creamy mayo dressing.  Add a side of your favorite potato chips for lunch or a nice side salad for a delicious and easy dinner.

Ingredients Needed for a Yummy Tuna Melt Sandwich

Tuna Fish – use your favorite tuna fish for this sandwich
American or Cheddar cheese – you could also make it really yummy and use some Velveeta cheese
Bread – we typically use white bread or a good sourdough bread for this tuna sandwich recipe
Mayonnaise – use a quality mayonnaise like Hellman’s for this recipe
Dijon mustard –  your favorite brand of Dijon mustard
Celery – fresh crisp celery
Red onion – soak in ice water for 10 minutes to take the bite out
Kosher dill pickles – optional
Butter – salted butter works well for sandwiches

Easy Steps to Make a Tuna Melt in the Oven

  1. In a medium bowl, mix drained tuna, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, chopped celery, red onion, chopped dill pickles, and season with salt and pepper to taste.
  2. Spread a thin layer of softened butter on one side of each slice of bread.
  3. Lay out the bread slices on a baking sheet.
  4. Flip two of the bread slices over, so the buttered side is facing down.
  5. Evenly distribute the tuna mixture over the unbuttered side of the two slices.
  6. Top each with a slice of American or cheddar cheese.
  7. Place the remaining two slices of bread on top of the tuna and cheese slices, buttered side up.
  8. Broil on low until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the slices of bread are toasted. This can take about 2-3 minutes.
  9. Flip sandwich over half way through cooking.
  10. Remove from the oven and slice the sandwiches in half.

Keep in Mind – Broiler temperatures can differ from oven to oven, so keep an eye on your  sandwiches the first few times you make this. Also, white bread can toast quicker than sourdough bread  or whole wheat.

A delicious tuna fish salad is a personal choice of what ingredients to add.  Don’t like pickles? Don’t add them!  Find out what ingredients you enjoy together the most.
