Souvlaki Tzatziki

There are just a few simple steps of marinating the meat, grilling it to perfection, and serving it with traditional accompaniments like tzatziki and pita bread.

Souvlaki on a plate

What to Serve with This Souvlaki Recipe:

No Greek Souvlaki experience is complete without the traditional accompaniments and sides. These flavorful additions will enhance the taste of the souvlaki and transport you straight to Greece. Here are some traditional Greek souvlaki accompaniments and sides to consider when serving this delicious Greek Souvlaki :

  • Tzatziki – This creamy cucumber and yogurt sauce is a staple in Greek cuisine. It adds a cool and refreshing element to the souvlaki. To make tzatziki, combine grated cucumber, plain Greek yogurt, minced garlic, lemon juice, chopped fresh dill, salt, and pepper.
  • Pita Bread – Soft and warm pita bread is the perfect vessel for wrapping your souvlaki. Warm pita bread is a common side dish or accompaniment to Souvlaki. You can serve the grilled meat in pita pockets, making it easy to eat as a sandwich. It adds a satisfying texture and helps soak up all the delicious juices.
  • Tomatoes and Onions – Fresh tomatoes and onions provide a burst of freshness and crunch. Slice them thinly and sprinkle them over your souvlaki for added flavor and texture.
  • Feta Cheese – A sprinkle of tangy feta cheese adds a salty and creamy element to your souvlaki. Crumble it over the top or serve it on the side for a true taste of Greece.
  • Greek Salad – A fresh Greek salad, also known as Horiatiki salad, is a wonderful side dish. It typically includes tomatoes, cucumbers, red onions, olives, feta cheese, and Greek dressing. The combination of flavors complements the grilled meat of the Souvlaki.
  • Rice Pilaf –  A simple rice pilaf flavored with herbs, lemon, or a bit of saffron can be a nice addition. It provides a neutral base that complements the flavors of the Souvlaki.

What to Do with Leftover Souvlaki?

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. Reheat leftovers in the microwave.

Freeze for Later: If you can’t use the leftover souvlaki right away, consider freezing it for future use. Wrap it tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil and store it in an airtight container to maintain its flavor and texture.

When reheating, be careful not to overcook the souvlaki as it can become dry. Use a microwave, oven, or stovetop to gently warm it up until it reaches the desired temperature.
