Ingredients

  • 8 slices sourdough bread slightly hardened*
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup fresh blackberries
  • 1 cup fresh raspberries
  • 1 medium lime juice and zest, preferably organic
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Combine the fresh berries, lime juice, lime zest, and powdered sugar in a large bowl and gently toss to combine. Set aside.
  2. Add the eggs, vanilla extract, milk, cinnamon, and nutmeg to a medium bowl and stir to combine.
  3. Soak the prepared bread in the egg mixture for 4-5 seconds per side, then transfer to a rimmed bowl. Set aside.
  4. Heat a large non-stick skillet over medium heat. Add two or three slices of the soaked bread to the hot skillet and cook for 3-4 minutes per side, or until golden brown on each side. Remove from skillet and repeat this process with the remaining bread slices.
  5. To serve, transfer the French toast onto individual plates and top with some of the fresh berry mixture and some powdered sugar and/or real maple syrup. Offer some crispy bacon or sausage links on the side, if desired. Enjoy!

Recipe Notes

*To harden, leave the sliced bread on the counter for several hours to overnight or place on a baking sheet in a warm (lowest setting) oven for 5-10 minutes.
