It is a simple and flavorful sauce made primarily from tomatoes, garlic, onions, olive oil, and various herbs and seasonings. The name “marinara” is derived from the Italian word “marinaro,” which means “sailor.” It is believed to have been created by sailors or fishermen in southern Italy, who would prepare it with basic ingredients they had on hand.
