Salisbury Steak Meatballs – Perfect Meatball Recipe
We double love these Salisbury Steak Meatballs because who doesn’t love Salisbury Steak made into a meatball? We have such fond memories of Grandmother’s Salisbury Steak for Sunday dinner! There was always plenty of mashed potatoes, thick brown gravy, and a big plate of fresh corn on the cob from her garden. (With gobs of butter.)
Salisbury steak is just hamburger mixed with onions, spices and breadcrumbs and shaped to resemble an actual steak. Typically Salisbury steak would be cooked with a delicious thickened gravy that was almost always served over mashed potatoes.
This meatball recipe creates Salisbury Steak Meatballs that are moist and delicious with a splash of tomato and brown sugar.
Kids love these Salisbury Steak meatballs so you may want to make extra!
- 1-1/2 lbs. lean ground beef
- 1 small onion, diced fine
- 1 medium egg
- 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons fresh parsley CHOPPED FINE
- 1 tablespoon canola oil FOR FRYING THE MEATBALLS
- 1 medium onion
- 1 tablespoon canola oil
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 2 tablespoons flour
- 2-1/4 cups beef broth
- 1/2 tablespoon red wine vinegar
- 1/2 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
Add the first 8 meatball ingredients into a large bowl and combine using your hands. Using an ice cream scoop, form about 18-20 meatballs. Heat 1 tablespoon of canola oil in a large skillet pan. Brown meatballs on all sides for about 2-3 minutes.
Remove meatballs from the skillet. Add an additional tablespoon of canola oil to the skillet and cook onions until soft. Stir through the tomato paste and then the flour. Slowly pour in the beef broth and vinegar; stir briskly until mixture is smooth. Add just a couple shakes of Worcestershire sauce.
Add the meatballs back into the pan and bring to a light boil. Cover; reduce heat and let gently simmer for 10 minutes. Remove the lid and let simmer for an additional 2 minutes to thicken the sauce.
