Healthy and Delicious Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes
For these Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes, we kept the taste of the original cheesesteak but make it a little healthier by adding chopped mushrooms and lentils.
By using mushrooms and lentils you can reduce the amount of beef needed for the sloppy joes. Instead of using 1 lb. of lean ground beef, we now typically use about 3/4 lb.
This is a great way to start to reduce your family’s beef intake and at the same time providing extra nutrients by using nutrient-dense, fiber-filling ingredients. And did we mention they are DELICIOUS! SUPER-DELICIOUS IN FACT!
Healthy and Delicious Remake of the Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich into Sloppy Joes that the Whole Family will LOVE.
- 1/2 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 small onion, chopped fine
- 8 oz. baby bella mushrooms, diced
- 3/4 lb. lean ground beef
- 2 cups beef broth, divided
- 1 tablespoon flour
- 1/2 cup green lentils
- 1/2 tablespoon Worcestershire
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
- 2 teaspoons steak seasoning (like Montreal)
- 8 slices provolone cheese. divided
- 6-8 buns (we use slider buns for these)

In a small sauce pan with a lid, bring one cup of beef broth to light boil. Stir in lentils; reduce heat and cook for 22-25 minutes or until lentils are very tender.

While the lentils are cooking, cook the mushrooms and onions in olive oil until the mushrooms are reduced by about half. Lightly salt and pepper and add a few splashes of Worcestershire sauce while cooking.

Add the ground beef to the skillet and continue cooking until the beef is well browned. Sprinkle beef with steak seasoning, garlic salt and pepper.

Once beef is well cooked, sprinkle with flour and stir until beef is coated.

Add lentils to the skillet with the beef.

Stir in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce and simmer on low for about 2-3 minutes.

Cut two slices of provolone cheese into small pieces and stir into beef. Stir until cheese has completely melted into the beef.

Spoon mixture on buns and top with an additional slice of provolone cheese.
Coarsely chop the baby bella mushrooms before cooking with the onions.
Once the mushrooms are cooked and reduced by about half, add the ground beef and continue cooking until the ground beef is cooked through. Sprinkle beef with Worcestershire sauce while its cooking. When sauteing ground beef in a skillet, chop the beef constantly with your spatula as it browns or you will end up with big clumps of beef.
When you add the cooked lentils to the ground beef and mushrooms, everything looks very similar. There is a good chance you can fool even the pickiest eater.
Mix some of the cheese in with the beef after the beef has been browned. We buy slices of provolone cheese for our sloppy joes instead of shredded cheese. Dice a couple slices of cheese to add to the beef.
