Cottage Cheese and Fresh Sliced Peaches
The Farmers Markets are brimming with fresh peaches right now and what could be more satisfying than a fresh juicy peach?
Cottage Cheese with Peaches!
Of all the fancy cheeses in the world we still do love our cottage cheese. We also love that this is the perfect healthy snack without adding tons of calories. A snack you will feel good about.
Didn’t we all have a grandmother that would fix plates of cottage cheese and fresh peach slices in the summer? You could smell the sweet peaches as they were being sliced and we would sit patiently waiting for that first savory-sweet bite.
Did you know you can smell sweet? Peaches are ripe when they “smell” sweet.
Grandma also knew that cottage cheese was good for us. Cottage cheese is high in protein and can be substituted for meat protein in any meal. Cottage cheese is also a nutrient-filled food that is beloved by dieters so it should always have a place in our fridge.
Why Eat More Cottage Cheese and Peaches?
If you are trying to save money and your waistline, a meal of cottage cheese and peaches along with a vegetable overloaded salad is perfect for Meatless Monday. Or pair the cottage cheese and peaches with a grilled cheese sandwich for a quick & cool dinner.
Cottage cheese contains many vitamins and nutrients including calcium which is important for good bone health.
Some types of cottage cheese also contain live cultures (or good bacteria) that are healthy for our gut. Like yogurt, you have to really read your labels to see if they contain the live cultures or not. Not all cottage cheese does.
Read the cottage cheese labels – not all cottage cheese has the same fat content nor the same sodium content. Some cottage cheese can be a little high in sodium so spare the salt shaker. It’s always best when eating cottage cheese to sprinkle lightly with black pepper. You can leave the salt at home.
Large Curd vs. Small Curd Cottage Cheese. In the end this is going to come down to personal preference. The best way to find your perfect cottage cheese is to read labels and try a few brands. Once people have picked their favorite brand of cottage cheese they typically stick with it forever. There are some very old brands of cottage cheese out there since way back when people made cottage cheese in their …. cottages!
But hey we don’t have to make cottage cheese in our cottages anymore – we can just go to the store for a tub of deliciousness.
FRESH PEACHES! – These peaches were perfectly ripened and sweet. Fresh from the Farmers Market.
YUM! Peaches are in peak season during the months of July and August. Just in time when things really start to heat up. Peaches and cottage cheese makes a perfectly refreshing snack on a hot summer day.
How to Prepare Fresh Peaches:
To prepare your peaches – boil a small pan of water and dip the peaches into boiling water for about 30 seconds. Remove peaches and run cold water over them for a few seconds. The skins should easily peel off and they are ready to be sliced.
Unfortunately, our beloved peach is on the “Dirty Dozen” list of foods that contain the most pesticides. Removing the skins of the peaches removes a lot of these nasty little pesticides.
If you aren’t hankering for your Grandmother’s Cottage Cheese and Peaches then spruce up the peach slices by adding a little lime juice and honey before serving.
Just mix 2 tablespoons of fresh lime juice with 1 tablespoon of honey. Peel and slice about 4 fresh peaches and toss to coat with the dressing. Super-Duper Yum Factor! +1
Enjoy! Run to the store and get some fresh & creamy cottage cheese and stop by your local Farmers Market for some chin-dribbling, juicy peaches.
What About Canned Peaches?
Canned peaches can make a great substitution for fresh.
Canned peaches are a perfect choice if fresh peaches are out of season or if you don’t have time to swing by your local farmers markets.
One of the benefits to canned peaches is they last a long time in your pantry and will be available if you pick up some cottage cheese at the grocery store. Canned peaches will last many years.
You can also typically pick up fresh canned peaches at your local farmer’s market. These will last about 12-18 months.
Read the labels on the canned peaches and see how much sugar you will be eating. There are many different varieties of canned peaches from heavy syrup to natural juices. Some our very high in sugar content so beware.
